AI Speed Cameras coming soon!

by | Jan 20, 2025 | PCO Driver News

As a Private Hire Vehicle driver in London, you will already be aware of the many types of speed cameras you have to be aware of on a daily basis.

On top of speed cameras, you also have to be aware of other types of cameras that will send you a PCN if you don’t follow certain traffic rules.

The most common types of speed cameras in London are the static yellow camera’s with markings on the road, as well as mobile speed traps that pop up in locations every now and then.

With the artificial intelligence revolution that we’re currently in, comes a new type of AI speed camera.

What are AI speed cameras?
The new AI speed cameras will be able to do more than just check how fast you are driving; they will also be able to check if the driver is using a mobile device or if the driver is wearing their seat belt.   These new sophisticated AI cameras will also be able to capture an image of the driver of the vehicle, so they cannot deny they were the driver at the time of an offence.

The new AI speed cameras will also be connected to the DVLA database and will be able to do quick checks on the vehicle to determine if it is taxed and insured.

When are AI speed cameras coming to London?
Well, in some sense they are already here.  Since 2023 these AI cameras have been fitted and tested on London roads.  These cameras have been collecting data to improve them before their full launch, on the first 3 days of testing these cameras in London they identified over 300 drivers committing a driving offence.

These new high-tech AI cameras will be slowly introduced all across the UK from March 2025.  Drivers caught breaking the rules will face fines, points on their drivers’ licence and in the worst cases they may face prosecution.

What do AI speed cameras look like?
Currently, as they test these new AI speed cameras, they are not permanently fixed on roads like normal speed cameras.  You can spot them parked up on the side of the roads on what look like vehicle trailers.

As professional PHV drivers spend a lot more time on the road, you should be especially aware of these cameras and stick to the rules to avoid getting points on your licence that could jeopardise your career as a driver.  It’s always best to stick to the rules and stay safe.
