SERU Assessment – 5 Top Tips

by | Jan 12, 2023 | TFL SERU

Hey by now you know all Private Hire Drivers will at some point need to take their SERU assessment with TfL. You’re also aware of the SERU assessment limitations of just 2 chances to pass.

So, we’ve put together 5 top tips to help you pass the SERU assessment!

1. Read the PHV Driver’s Handbook
Everything you need to know to pass the SERU assessment is in the handy 52-page PDF Transport for London (TfL) have put together. The PHV Driver’s Handbook is I divided in to 10 sections. Commit to reading one section per day which should take a maximum of 30minutes if you read slowly and take in all the information.

2. Take notes
It may be a long time since you last had to study for an exam. But did you know taking notes when learning helps you memorise things better. When you’re reading through the PHV Driver’s Handbook or completing an online SERU assessment course, make sure you take notes. If you have a printout of the PHV Handbook, use a highlighter to mark any key points.
3. Discuss it with other drivers
One way to make sure you’ve understood something correctly is to discuss it with other people who are learning the same thing. When you get the chance, sit down with a fellow private hire driver, and talk about the sections of the SERU assessment and often you will find clarity in any sections you didn’t fully grasp.

4. Take a SERU Mock Test
After you’ve read the PHV Drivers Handbook or done an online SERU assessment course, make sure you take a SERU Mock Test. You can do this online, and we offer a SERU Mock Test that is timed just like the real SERU assessment. This will help you get a better feel of what to expect and give you the confidence that you can complete and pass the SERU assessment.

5. Be prepared
I guess everything we’ve mentioned before this point is about preparing for the SERU assessment. But here we want to stress a few things. For example, if your English isn’t great and you find it very difficult to read the PHV driver handbook, then we would suggest you take the time to enrol on to an English Course. You will find there are many free English courses provided by local boroughs. Be real with yourself, don’t waste your 2 chances to pass the SERU assessment. Take an English course if you must and then read the PHV driver’s handbook.

Conclusion
Apart from the 5 points above, remember to wait for your SERU assessment invitation from TfL, it can be at any time so the earlier you prepare the better. Make sure you don’t miss your SERU assessment appointment without a good reason. We know exams can be stressful, especially when there may have been a big gap since you last did an exam but don’t worry too much, many drivers who have done their SERU assessment have said they were pleasantly surprised at how simple the exam was.

We’re here to help, you can sign up for our online SERU assessment training course or our online SERU mock test. Start early and if you need extra access before your actual SERU assessment date, just fill out the Further Access form on our website and we’ll arrange for you to get extra access just before your SERU assessment with TfL.
